Guard Against Roof Stains Caused By Fungus, Moss & Algae

The life expectancy of your roof varies with climatic conditions. Generally, wood or asphalt roofs can be expected to last from 15 to 20 years.

Regardless of the region you live in, climatic conditions will allow moisture to be retained on all or at least on some portions of your roof. The life expectancy of your roof can be shortened considerably because of this condition which promotes the growth of destructive moss, fungus and algae.

Sunlight obstructions such as over-hangs, shade trees or even a northern exposure only serve to increase the build-up of moss, fungus and algae.

Your roof's overall appearance can look inconsistent - what seems to be "weathering" may very well be green, white or black patches of fungus discoloring the roof surface and breaking down its' fibers.

Moss, fungus and algae can penetrate wood or compromise roof surfaces - weakening fibers, wearing off the grits, and curling, rounding or raking off corners. If allowed to build up heavily, moss, fungus and algae can even lift the shingles.

Protect New Roofs With Shingle Shield

Now for new roofs or roofs presently clean of fungus, moss or algae growth, Chicago Metallic has developed a zinc-based roof protection product designed to inhibit the growth of moss, fungus and algae on roof surfaces.

Shingle Shield interrupts the flow of rain and naturally time releases fungistiatic compounds of zinc oxide which travel evenly down the roof slope. These compounds are absorbed by the roof surface and inhibits the growth of moss, fungus and algae.

This "natural process" is of low toxicity. Zinc oxide compounds wash and protect the roof, with no visible sign of this action. Shingle Shield works ideally at a typical roof pitch of 4 in 12. A second row of Shingle Shield is recommended at midpoint on a pitch of 12 in 12 (45 degree angle typical of an A-Frame) or on roof slopes greater than 20' for maximum effectiveness.
